Apparently, before I fell asleep last night, I left myself orders to write out all of my character archetypes. So I’m going to.
I don’t mean standard ones (though I assume there’s a fair bit of overlap); I mean I ordered myself to disassemble the particular cast of recurring themes that seem to come up whenever I create a character, whether it’s for a piece of writing or a game. Part of it is the result of cannibalizing old characters that I never use anymore and putting my favourite bits to use in something new, but some of it happens because I apparently just really like the following sorts of character.
Archetypes are always fun things, so I thought y’all might enjoy some of these.
Also, this way I could highlight this sentence:
There is something of a rule in my writing: the more delicate and effete a male character seems, the more unbreakable or ferocious he will be under great duress.

One of my favourite types of character has always been the elf cleric, white mage, whatever. Usually involves a lot of standing in the back being quiet and introverted, being the healer or support character, wearing lots of flowy things, etc. But they’ll be the last one alive and will call down fire and death in vengeance, and will also be the last one to sell out or abandon what they hold dear.
